Thermal imaging roof survey in Studdal, Kent
An experienced roof surveyor for thermal roof surveys in Studdal. More than 20 years and over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
How a thermal roof survey works in Studdal
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging frequently helps most. Patterns can suggest where water is trapped under the covering. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we also look from the loft where we can reach it safely. We survey insulated roof spaces, commercial roofs and pitched roof slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are leaks that are hard to trace and heat escaping through the roof.
In a small place like Studdal, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

The survey, step by step
Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes between one and two hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. You’re welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Somewhere like Studdal needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we are coming

How we price thermal roof surveys
All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Booking your survey
There is no need for technical words. It is enough to let us know:
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- The kind of building and roof involved
Unsure which package suits your roof? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.
Questions from Studdal
Will you come out to Studdal?
Yes, Studdal is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Is Studdal in the area you cover?
Yes, Studdal is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
How soon will I get the report?
It depends on the package: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Can a thermal camera see water?
The camera does not see water itself. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, and moisture readings are used to check it.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
How long is the visit?
Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take about 1–2 hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.
What you can safely check yourself
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Flying and imaging in Studdal
Studdal is within about 5 miles of the coast, and coastal wind can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. With Walmer Castle about 4 miles east, Studdal sits in an area with a long building history. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near East Studdal Church Hall, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

What we can’t see
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- Proving moisture from the images alone
- A formal energy assessment
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. Access is agreed with the tenant beforehand.
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which can make access easier.
How the survey changes by roof type
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Problems where roof slopes and walls meet are often hidden. A careful visual inspection goes alongside the images.
Loft insulation
In the loft space, the camera can pick up gaps and thin areas of insulation. We look where there is safe access.
