Thermal imaging roof survey in Margate, Kent
Get a clear view of the roof at a property in Margate. We visit on weekdays and at weekends.
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Cold areas below the roof
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Thermal roof survey in Margate
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging often helps most. Patterns can suggest where water is trapped under the covering. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access. If you’ve noticed heat escaping through the roof and thin or uneven insulation in the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on pitched roof slopes, commercial roofs and flat roofs alike.
In a town like Margate, the roofs that are hardest to see are often on taller buildings, steep slopes or the backs of terraces. A drone can take close-up photos of them, and thermal imaging can show patterns of heat loss or trapped moisture. Each needs the right weather. Rear slopes over back additions are a common example, as they’re rarely visible from the street.
The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

How it works
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect what can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. A visit in Margate runs most smoothly with the loft hatch clear, side gates open and a parking spot in mind. Someone needs to let us in, so let us know who that will be.
- You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Before we arrive
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Keep pets in another room

Advice
Tips from our surveys
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
- Talk to us about the weather when booking
- File the images with your roof records
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
We note the weather and surface conditions, and how they may have affected the results. That way you know how much weight to give each finding.
Consider a repeat survey after major work on the roof in suitable weather.
Common questions in Margate
Is my home in Margate listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Margate in the area you cover?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Margate is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and tell us about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
What do I do with the report?
The report arrives by email. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.
Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there’s safe access.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Margate
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords. Larger roofs take longer.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant.
Thermal roof surveys around Margate
Margate lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Margate has a number of hotels within about a mile and a half, and hotels, like offices and blocks of flats, often have flat roofs. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.
For an older house near a landmark such as Parish Church of St John the Baptist, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Westwood Cross, big, flat commercial roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images help most. For hotels and guest houses around Margate, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition.

- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Booking your survey
Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or use the contact form whenever suits you.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Wet insulation under a flat roof doesn’t dry out on its own while the covering stays on. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. Roof faults found early can be planned for, whereas a leak tends to force the timing on you.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT.
