Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Whitstable
A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp isn’t obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings don’t rely on the camera alone. Common reasons to book are wet insulation beneath the membrane and damp around chimneys and parapets, across pitched roof slopes, ceilings below the roof and flat roofs.
Older homes in a town like Whitstable may lose heat through roofs with little or no insulation. A thermal camera shows those cold and warm patches, and some of them can point to moisture. What it shows is surface temperature, not water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings, while drone photos show the outside of the same roof. Results depend on conditions, so the timing of the visit matters.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What happens if roof problems are left?
The longer moisture sits in a roof, the more it can affect timbers and finishes below. Looking now, while the damage may still be limited, keeps more options open. Roof faults found early can be planned for, whereas a leak tends to force the timing on you.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

How it works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes between one and two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. A typical visit in Whitstable begins with the street side of the roof and then moves round the building. Rear gardens and side paths frequently give the best view of extensions and back slopes, so unlocked gates help. Then, if it can be reached safely, we look in the loft.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.

Advice
Practical tips
You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it is easy to find each area on the roof.
Check loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.
Airspace, weather and Whitstable roofs
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Whitstable, and coastal wind can be strong. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. Handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles hung on pegs through two holes, are typical of older Kent buildings. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St John (Methodist), thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Whitstable School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

DIY checks: what’s safe
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Questions from Whitstable
What do I need to do before a survey in Whitstable?
Not much. Keep pets out of the way, leave side gates unlocked and have any old roof paperwork handy, and the visit in Whitstable can get straight on.
Is Whitstable in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
How do I book a survey in Whitstable?
The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and a few details about the roof. We survey seven days a week.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we will plan the survey around it.
What conditions are best for thermal imaging?
Conditions on the day affect the results. It works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we talk through the forecast when you book.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.
What does the report include?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photographs. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.
