Tarpots Thermal Roof Survey
Find out the condition of the roof at your property in Tarpots. Visits run on weekdays and weekends, in the daytime.
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Heat escaping through the roof
Different roofs, different checks
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Because these membranes are thin, patterns from below often show. Shiny surfaces can reflect heat, so we take care reading the images.
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Water often gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. The camera can help show damp around these junctions.
Thermal roof survey in Tarpots
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. If you are worried about damp patches with no obvious cause and wet insulation beneath the membrane, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Older buildings in small places like Tarpots may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Airspace, weather and Tarpots roofs
Tarpots is within about 4 miles of the coast, and coastal wind can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.
Shop and office owners around Eastgate Shopping Centre may find that a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. Take an older house close to St George: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. If you look after a building like The Appleton School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Tarpots is about 1 mile west of Thundersley, in Essex. Tarpots gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a close look at everything that’s safely in view, photos and a clear written report. Our area takes in places right across Essex. We also survey roofs in Chelmsford.
Surveys in SS7 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Local streets include London Road, Hatley Gardens and High Road, all of which we cover. Nearby, we also carry out thermal roof surveys in South Benfleet (1 mile south-east), North Benfleet (1 mile north-west), Thundersley (1 mile east), Bowers Gifford (1 mile west) and Pitsea (2 miles west). Within a short drive, we also cover Chelmsford (12 miles north), Basildon (4 miles west), Brentwood (11 miles west), Maldon (13 miles north-east), Canvey Island (3 miles south-east) and Billericay (7 miles north-west).
Landmarks near Tarpots
Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to Jotmans Hall Primary School, among other places. Tarpots’s nearest station is Benfleet station, about 1.6 miles south of the centre. A little further out are The Motor Boat Museum (3 miles west) and Chartwell Private Hospital (3.8 miles east). For a walk, there’s Bowers Marsh RSPB Reserve.
Tips from our surveys
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Photograph damp patches with the date
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. We explain what each image may mean, alongside what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.
Have small defects in the covering fixed early. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends, which can make access easier.
Questions from Tarpots
Is my home in Tarpots listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will you come out to Tarpots?
Yes, Tarpots is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. The report will say if you need an engineer.
When does the report arrive?
It depends on the package: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.
How many surveys have you done?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Surveys run seven days a week. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. The Premium Survey also covers a full inspection, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day.
Honest limits
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- A formal energy assessment

What we look at
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
The survey, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take about one to two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Tarpots often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Getting ready for the survey
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
