Thermal imaging roof survey in Tower Hill, West Sussex
Thermal roof surveys in Tower Hill and the rest of West Sussex. We survey on any day of the week.
- Stains that keep coming back
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Ceilings that feel colder in places
How a thermal roof survey works in Tower Hill
Wet insulation under a flat roof covering holds heat for longer than dry. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, something you can’t usually tell from the surface. We then check those areas with moisture readings. If you’ve noticed damp around chimneys and parapets and damp around roof outlets and upstands, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Villages like Tower Hill often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Different roofs, different checks
Loft insulation
Insulation often gets moved during work in the loft. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We check cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there’s a pattern around them.
Tips that help
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
- Make sure the loft can be reached safely
- Don’t switch the heating off before the visit
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, so you can go through the images with us. There’s a 12-month follow-up too.
Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Early action keeps insulation from staying wet.
What we cannot see
Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- A formal energy assessment
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.
Common questions in Tower Hill
Is Tower Hill in the area you cover?
Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, and Tower Hill is part of that. Just call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.
Is my home in Tower Hill listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, but we check each finding with moisture readings.
Will I get photos?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?
The camera records how the surface temperature varies. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat loss. Findings are checked with moisture readings.
Which survey includes thermal imaging?
It is part of the Premium Survey, from £400. You also get an in-person consultation and a 12-month follow-up. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.
Do I need to be at home?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We’ll talk about access when booking.
Do you need a thermal roof survey in Tower Hill?
After a repair, some owners want to know whether the roof has dried out. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain, given suitable conditions on the day.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Moisture around outlets and upstands
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Water that travels before it shows
If you look after a building such as St John's Catholic Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Questions to ask before you book
- Will the report include photos?
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- How long the report takes to arrive
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
Airspace, weather and Tower Hill roofs
Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.
If you live in an older home near Parish Church of St Mary, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

The survey, step by step
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes an hour or two at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Rural addresses near Tower Hill can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- The weather and surface conditions are recorded.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Before we arrive
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
