- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
Thermal roof survey in Ufton Nervet: what you get
A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp is not obvious. Leaks often run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. If you’ve noticed gaps in loft insulation and areas of a flat roof that may hold water, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a small place like Ufton Nervet, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Why act early in Ufton Nervet
Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Ufton Nervet, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Ufton Nervet
How do I find out if my home in Ufton Nervet is listed?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Do you cover Ufton Nervet?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Ufton Nervet is part of that. Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
What insurance do you have?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
Not directly. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. That’s why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
What happens next?
The report arrives by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?
The camera records how the surface temperature varies. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or heat escaping. We check what it shows with moisture readings.
Can you survey at the weekend?
Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.
Different roofs, different checks
Loft insulation
The difference is clearest when the home is heated and it is cold out. We explain in the report how the conditions on the day affected what we saw.
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Felt and asphalt roofs often show wet areas as patches that differ from the rest. Moisture readings are used to check them.
When you need someone else
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
- A formal energy assessment
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will suggest the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Flat roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Loft conversions
- Ceilings below the roof
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
How the survey works
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere as small as Ufton Nervet, access is often the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
- We look at the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
How to prepare
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Flying and imaging in Ufton Nervet
Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand.
If you look after a building such as Sulhamstead and Ufton Nervet School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Take an older house close to Church of St Peter: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Tips from our surveys
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Keep a record of when stains appear
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
If you’re buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. What you do with it is up to you, whether that’s asking for work or discussing the price.
Make sure loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Insulation is often moved when people work in the roof space.
