Drones, thermal imaging and Ugley Green roofs
Ugley Green is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Stansted Airport. If the drone is used for your survey, we ask the airport for permission first, and only fly if it’s given. Historic houses like Horham Hall, about 4.2 miles east, show how far back building in the area around Ugley Green goes. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.
Ugley Green is about 4 miles north-east of Bishop's Stortford, in Essex. Ugley Green is one of many places we visit across Essex, for houses, flats and commercial buildings. Our area takes in places right across Essex. For surveys nearby, see our Chelmsford page.
Surveys in CM22 are booked the same way as anywhere else. That includes homes and businesses on Dellows Lane, Bedwell Road and Field Gate Lane and the roads around them. Other places close to Ugley Green include Elsenham (1 mile south-east), Fuller's End (1 mile south-east), Ugley (1 mile north-west), Henham (2 miles north-east) and Quendon (2 miles north). Within a short drive, we also cover Braintree (15 miles east), Harlow (11 miles south), Saffron Walden (7 miles north), Great Dunmow (7 miles south-east), Great Notley (14 miles east) and Bocking (15 miles east).

Thermal roof survey in Ugley Green: what you get
Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging often helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can hide what’s below, so we combine the camera with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access. If you’ve noticed wet insulation beneath the membrane and moisture around outlets and upstands, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Somewhere as small as Ugley Green, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What else we do in Ugley Green
What happens on the day
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. For a village or hamlet like Ugley Green, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before we arrive
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Keep pets in another room

Honest limits
A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and does not.
Roof types and parts we check
- Ceilings below the roof
- Pitched roof slopes
- Insulated roof spaces
- Flat roofs
- Commercial roofs
- Loft conversions
Checking the roof from the ground
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Ugley Green questions
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ugley Green?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Are there drone restrictions around Ugley Green?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Ugley Green is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Stansted Airport. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it is given. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to.
What happens after the survey?
The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.
How much does a thermal roof survey cost?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a same-day report.
How quickly is the report sent?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.
How experienced are you?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photos included.
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, call 07833 053749 or email us with the addresses.
Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Check outlets after heavy rain
- Do not switch the heating off ahead of the visit
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
If the images suggest moisture that can’t be confirmed, we will say what would help next, for example electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.
Have small defects in the covering fixed early. Water that gets under a covering can spread a long way before it shows.
Do you need a thermal roof survey in Ugley Green?
Buyers sometimes want more than a visual look at the roof. A Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report, which helps when timescales are tight.
Problems we come across frequently include:
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Damp patches with no obvious cause
- Missing or slipped insulation
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Forest Hall School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- How soon the report will arrive
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
