Thermal roof survey in Wargrave: what you get

Flat roofs over extensions, garages, flats and commercial buildings are where thermal imaging frequently helps most. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we also look from the loft where we can reach it safely. Common reasons to book are areas of a flat roof that may hold water and cold areas below the roof, on loft conversions, flat roofs and ceilings below the roof.

Places like Wargrave can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.

After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Leave it or get it looked at?

A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so improvements can go where they’re needed. Around Wargrave, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, and that is a much bigger job than the original defect.

Flying and imaging in Wargrave

If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Historic houses such as Harleyford Manor, about 4.2 miles north-east, show how far back building in the area around Wargrave goes. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Robert Piggott CofE Infant School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

What we look for on each type of roof

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

Felt and asphalt roofs often show wet areas as patches that differ from the rest. Moisture readings are used to check them.

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Inside the roof space, thermal images can help with damp around stacks, valleys and roof windows. We check any patterns with moisture readings.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, useful for planning maintenance.

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • A formal energy assessment
  • The condition of timbers we cannot see
  • Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

  • Commercial roofs

FAQs for Wargrave

How do I find out if my home in Wargrave is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Is Wargrave in the area you cover?

Yes, Wargrave is within the area we cover. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and tell us about the property.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first, with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we’ll explain what’s needed.

Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?

Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.

Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?

It is a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. The results depend on conditions on the day. If the source can’t be confirmed, we’ll say what could help next, such as electronic leak detection.

Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there’s safe access.

How it works

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. In a smaller place like Wargrave, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Before the survey

What you can safely check yourself

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
