Thermal roof surveys in Lower Shiplake: local notes

Greenlands, about 3.6 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Lower Shiplake. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

Take an older house close to Church of St Mary: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Take a building like Shiplake Church of England School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

About our thermal roof survey in Lower Shiplake

Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. You also get a drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a report on the same day. There’s an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for their size. If you’ve noticed damp around chimneys and parapets and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on flat roofs, loft conversions and ceilings below the roof alike.

Some older homes in villages like Lower Shiplake are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What a survey costs

We confirm the price for your roof before you book. This is what makes a difference:

  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • How big the roof is
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings

All our prices include VAT. Prices start from £400, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your roof before booking.

What to tell us when you get in touch

Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • Dates you’re working to, like exchange
  • Anything about access we should know

Getting a price is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and give us some details about the property and we will explain which survey suits. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

For landlords and managing agents

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.

We survey roofs for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the roof, useful for planning maintenance.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Lower Shiplake

Repeated repairs that don’t stop a leak are a sign the source hasn’t been traced. Thermal imaging with moisture readings can help narrow it down, rather than more guesswork. In a small place like Lower Shiplake, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

Why book with us

  • Photos and a written report every time
  • An independent view of the roof
  • Surveys on weekdays and at weekends
  • Clear package prices, with VAT included

FAQs for Lower Shiplake

Is my home in Lower Shiplake listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do you cover smaller places like Lower Shiplake?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?

It frequently helps show where to look. Water can travel under a covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help follow it. It’s used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings because the camera can’t confirm water on its own.

Are you insured?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and details are available on request.

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when you book.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.

Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?

The camera can point to heat loss and gaps in insulation. The survey isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the report shows where to look more closely.

What you can safely check yourself

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

Different roofs, different checks

GRP fibreglass roofs

Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We allow for reflections and confirm findings with moisture readings.

Loft insulation

Heat loss shows most clearly when it’s warm inside and colder outside. Our report notes how the conditions affected the images.

How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. It normally takes between one and two hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. Rural addresses near Lower Shiplake can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
