Thermal roof surveys near West Street

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in West Street

Thermal imaging is often most useful on flat roofs, from small extensions to large commercial roofs. It can show patterns that point to trapped moisture under the membrane. Pitched roofs with slates or tiles are often harder to read, because of the air space beneath, so we also look from the loft where we can reach it safely. Common reasons to book are areas of a flat roof that may hold water and water getting in at parapets and stacks, across pitched roof slopes, insulated roof spaces and flat roofs.

In a village or hamlet like West Street, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible.

Can I check my roof myself?

You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in West Street

Will you come out to West Street?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Is my home in West Street listed or in a conservation area?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?

Thermal imaging can help, alongside other checks. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. Where it can’t be pinned down, the report suggests a next step, like electronic leak detection.

How do I arrange a thermal roof survey in West Street?

The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Let us know the address and a little about the roof. We survey on weekdays and at weekends.

Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there’s safe access.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Does someone need to be in?

That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed as you book.

How it works

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Rural addresses near West Street can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Before the survey

  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Let us know where we can park nearby

Flying and imaging in West Street

If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles hung on pegs through two holes, are typical of older Kent buildings. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

Take a building like The Lenham School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • Confirming water without moisture readings
  • Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
  • Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections

  • Flat roofs
  • Loft conversions
  • Commercial roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Pitched roof slopes

Useful tips for West Street property owners

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
  • Keep a record of when stains appear
  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Leave the roof to people with safe access

Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it is easy to find each area on the roof.

Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in West Street

Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. A thermal camera adds another way of finding them.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Damp that repairs haven’t cured
  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Cold spots on ceilings under the roof

Leeds Castle, about 4.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around West Street. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.
