Chimney surveys for homes and businesses in Bowling Alley

Our chimney survey covers the stack and the details that keep water out around it: pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing, bricks and the flashings at the roof line. We also look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there is safe access. The findings come in a written report with photos and recommendations. We survey single stacks on houses and groups of stacks on bigger buildings. Typical surveys look at signs that a stack is leaning and cracked or missing flaunching, on chimney pots and cowls, chimney breasts and brick chimney stacks.

Older buildings in small places like Bowling Alley may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

How the survey works

You don’t need to do much on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Somewhere like Bowling Alley needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. You let us know whether any stacks are shared, unused or leaning.
  2. The flashings and the roof around each chimney are inspected.
  3. We look at the flaunching and pots on every stack.
  4. Any lean, spalling or worn pointing is recorded.
  5. The report explains the condition and which work is most urgent.

How to prepare

  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear

Chimney surveys in Bowling Alley: local notes

Farnham Castle, about 3.1 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Bowling Alley. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.

If you let a flat or house near Winchfield station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as St Nicholas' School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

Bowling Alley is about 2 miles south-west of Fleet, in Surrey. In Bowling Alley, as across Surrey, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our area takes in places right across Surrey. There is also a page for Guildford.

Brick stacks

Frost can damage bricks that have soaked up water, making the faces flake away. We record any we can see.

Lead flashings

Over time, lead can lift or come away from the brickwork. We photograph any we find that look loose or damaged.

Do you need a chimney survey in Bowling Alley?

The flaunching on top of a stack holds the pots in place and sheds water. Cracked flaunching lets water in, and each winter makes it worse. In time, the pots can become loose.

People usually book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:

  • Damp patches on chimney breasts
  • A stack that appears to lean
  • Cracked or missing flaunching
  • Gaps where the stack meets the roof

If you live in an older home near Church of All Saints, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • What happens after the report arrives

What a roof survey includes

Tips from our surveys

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Never climb onto the roof to look at a chimney
  • Check that disused chimneys can still breathe
  • Look at the chimneys with binoculars after a storm
  • File photos of the stacks with your home records

If the stack is shared, you can pass the report to your neighbour. It shows what we found and where from the viewpoints we used.

Watch for damp or staining on chimney breasts. The sooner damp is spotted, the easier the cause is to find.

Why act early in Bowling Alley

Cracked flaunching and worn pointing are often modest repairs when they’re caught early. Leave it, and frost can work the stack loose, and the work grows. Outbuildings and barns around Bowling Alley are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. We confirm the price for your survey before you book.
