About our chimney survey in Hempton
On terraced and semi-detached houses, a chimney stack is often shared with next door. We inspect the parts we can see safely and the parts the owner gives us access to. If a defect appears to be on the neighbour’s side, we note it, so you can talk to them. You get a written report with photos and our recommendations. Typical surveys look at loose, cracked or missing pots and staining on walls around the chimney, across brick chimney stacks, lead flashings and shared and party-wall stacks.
In a small place like Hempton, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

How we price chimney surveys
Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- Basic, Standard or Premium
- Roof area
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

Hempton questions
Is Hempton within the area you cover?
Yes, Hempton is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Is my home in Hempton listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Will you check the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.
What do you check on a chimney?
The survey covers the pots and cowls, the flaunching, the pointing, the bricks and the flashings. We also check chimney breasts and the stack in the loft space where we can reach. Everything is written up with photographs.
Do you inspect shared chimneys?
Yes. Many houses share stacks with a neighbour. We survey what we can see safely, and note anything that seems to involve next door.
Will you check the chimney is safe to use with a fire?
No. It is not a flue, sweep or gas safety inspection. We check the stack, pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, and damp inside, and we’ll say if anything suggests the flue needs checking.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone.
Leave it or get it looked at?
For a buyer, the best time to learn about a chimney is before exchange. After that, any work is yours to arrange and pay for. Our report gives you facts to raise with the seller or agent. For an older or listed building in a place like Hempton, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
All our prices include VAT. Prices start from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before booking.

Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Check fixings on the stack are secure
- Look at the chimneys with binoculars after a storm
- Keep the report to compare against at the next survey
- Keep track of stains on chimney breasts
If the stack is shared, you can pass the report to your neighbour. It shows what we found and where, as far as we could see.
Look at your chimneys from ground level now and then, particularly after strong winds. With binoculars, you can frequently see cracked flaunching or lifted lead.
What we do, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take between one and two hours at a house, as part of a look at the roof around the stack. Cottages and farmhouses around Hempton often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First we talk through the stacks, their history and any problems.
- Each stack is inspected from safe positions outside.
- Pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings are checked and photographed.
- Inside, the chimney breasts and the loft are checked for damp where there’s access.
- You get a written report with photos and recommendations by email.
Preparing for the visit
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
Arrange a survey
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or send us an email whenever suits you.

Chimney surveys around Hempton
About 4.3 miles north-west lies Broughton Castle, a reminder of how long the area around Hempton has been built on. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
If you live in an older home near Saint John the Evangelist, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. If you let a flat or house near Kings Sutton station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.
