About our chimney survey in Temple

Many terraced and semi-detached homes share their chimney stacks with a neighbour. We check what can be seen safely and what the owner gives us access to. If a defect appears to be on the neighbour’s side, we note it, so you can talk to them. You get a written report with photos and what we recommend. Typical surveys look at gaps where the stack meets the roof and spalled or crumbling bricks, across flaunching, brick chimney stacks and shared and party-wall stacks.

Village roofs frequently face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the chimney stack, any defects and our written recommendations.

Signs you need a chimney survey in Temple

TV aerials, satellite dishes and their brackets are frequently fixed to chimneys. Their weight and the wind on them can loosen bricks and pointing. We check fixings on the stack as part of the survey.

It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Damaged chimney pots and cowls
  • Damp on a chimney breast inside
  • Cracked or missing flaunching
  • Disused chimneys trapping moisture

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of All Saints, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
  • What insurance they carry

What a good roof survey covers

Chimney surveys around Temple

Some villages in Buckinghamshire still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. About 0.9 miles west lies Harleyford Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Temple has been built on. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

For landlords with property near Marlow station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. Anyone responsible for a site like Bisham Church of England Academy will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Temple is about 2 miles south of Marlow, in Buckinghamshire. In Temple, as across Buckinghamshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Across Buckinghamshire, we cover Temple and the places around it. You can also see our page for Reading.

What you can safely check yourself

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book and it will help the survey.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the chimney stack, with photos, useful for planning maintenance.

Your questions about chimney surveys in Temple

I let a flat near Marlow station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and letting agents book with us as well as owners. Just call 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the building, including who will give access on the day.

Is my home in Temple listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

How do I arrange a chimney survey in Temple?

To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us the address and what you want to find out. We’ll confirm the price and agree a day with you.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.

Will I get photos?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days when you book.

What this survey cannot tell you

Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • Whether the flue is safe to use
  • Whether a gas appliance or its flue is safe

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

What we look at

  • Brick chimney stacks
  • Chimney breasts
  • Lead flashings
  • Shared and party-wall stacks
  • Chimney pots and cowls
  • Flaunching

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney pots and cowls

Damaged pots are a safety concern as well as a leak risk. We photograph each pot and note any damage.

Chimney breasts and the loft

In the loft, staining around the stack often shows where water is getting in. We record what we see with photographs.

How it works

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, a little longer where there are several stacks. Around Temple, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. You tell us how many stacks there are and any damp or problems you’ve noticed.
  2. The stacks are looked at from ground level, from windows and from other safe vantage points.
  3. We check and photograph the pots, cowls, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
  4. Inside, we look for damp on chimney breasts and in the loft where there’s safe access.
  5. The findings are written up with photos and recommendations and emailed to you.

Preparing for the visit

  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
