Flying and imaging in Digswell

Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. The wider area around Digswell has a long history of building, with Digswell House about 0.3 miles west. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near Howard Centre, big, flat commercial roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images help most. If you look after a building such as Harwood Hill Junior Mixed Infant and Nursery School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Digswell Village Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Digswell is about 1 mile north of Welwyn Garden City, in Hertfordshire. From houses to flats and shops in Digswell, we can survey the roof. Our area takes in places right across Hertfordshire. London is in our area too.

Surveys in AL8, AL7 and AL6 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. Whether your property is on Adele Avenue, Station Road and Hertford Road or anywhere close by, we can help. Drone roof survey in Digswell

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. We survey chimney stacks, fragile roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are moss and weeds taking hold up top and flashings that have come away.

Places like Digswell can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Open ground can mean stronger wind, which also affects whether a small drone can fly, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Each flight is planned with neighbours’ privacy in mind, as well as the airspace and the wind.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What this survey cannot tell you

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

Questions from Digswell

Do you cover smaller places like Digswell?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

How do I find out if my home in Digswell is listed?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

How experienced are you?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Are you insured?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

What does a roof survey cost?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT.

What happens after the survey?

You will get the report by email. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

Can the drone do thermal imaging?

No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

The survey, step by step

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes between one and two hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. A visit to a smaller place like Digswell is no different on the day: we look from ground level, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. It helps to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

Advice

Why it’s worth a survey now in Digswell

Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. A drone replaces that guesswork with clear photos, slope by slope. Seeing the problem makes it easier to decide what to do. With lower homes, common in places like Digswell, there’s little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Finding the cause first saves a second job inside.

There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

What we look for on each type of roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.

Valleys and parapet gutters

When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

For landlords and managing agents

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Let us know about it as you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.
