Drone roof survey in Herne Bay: what you get
Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. We keep the camera on the roof we are surveying, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it is worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we are there to survey. We survey tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and the problems we are asked to look at most are vegetation in valleys and gutters and lifted or split lead flashings.
In a town like Herne Bay, the roofs that are hardest to see are frequently on taller buildings, steep slopes or the backs of terraces. Close-up drone photos and thermal images show what binoculars from the pavement cannot. Each needs the right weather. Rear slopes over back additions are a common example, as they’re rarely visible from the street.
We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

Practical tips
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
- Shut pets inside while we fly
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
- Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
Your report arrives by email, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow.
Roof by roof
Valleys and parapet gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. You cannot see it from the street at all, but it’s plain to see from the air.
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.
Do you need a drone roof survey in Herne Bay?
Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.
Look out for signs like these:
- Wind damage high on the roof
- Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
- Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
- Standing water on a flat roof
If you live in an older home near Christ Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Before you book anyone
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- What they won’t be able to tell you
- How soon the report will arrive
What we can’t see
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:
- Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

Drones, thermal imaging and Herne Bay roofs
Herne Bay is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
Take a building like Herne Bay Junior School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

FAQs for Herne Bay
How do I find out if my home in Herne Bay is listed?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you cover Herne Bay?
Yes, Herne Bay is within the area we cover. We work right across London and South East England. You can ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a few details, and we will talk through which survey suits.
Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?
The drone gives you detailed photos of the outside of the roof. Thermal imaging comes with the Premium Survey, as a separate check.
What if it’s windy or raining on the day?
We don’t fly in strong wind or a downpour. The weather on the day decides whether the drone goes up. If we cannot fly, we will arrange another day.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access when you book.
What insurance do you have?
Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Is your drone operator registered?
Yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We fly a sub-250g drone and keep it in sight at all times.
Checking the roof from ground level
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
The survey, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take between one and two hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. A visit in Herne Bay runs most smoothly with the loft hatch clear, side gates open and a parking spot in mind. If you will not be there yourself, let us know who will let us in.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
Before the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Keep pets in another room
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached
