Hollow Street: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hollow Street?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Will you come out to Hollow Street?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
When does the report arrive?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days when you book.
What does the report include?
A photo-illustrated written report, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, with the most urgent first where relevant. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
Are you registered with the CAA?
Yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We fly a sub-250g drone and follow the drone code.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Hollow Street
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Flight restriction zones around airports like Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission isn’t given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, tall and steep roofs and large and complex roofs, and people most often book us about storm damage on steep or tall roofs and cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below.
Older buildings in small places like Hollow Street may be listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

How we price drone roof surveys
All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.
What to let us know when you contact us
To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:
- What’s prompted the survey
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Anything about access we should know
- When you need the report by
Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from ground level or a window, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To get started, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Practical tips
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
- Move stored items away from the hatch
There’s a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year, and whether work has done its job.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
Signs you need a drone roof survey in Hollow Street
Large roofs take a long time to see on foot. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
- Cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
Anyone responsible for a site like Chislet Church of England Primary School will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Drone roof surveys in Hollow Street: local notes
Hollow Street is within about 4 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Across Kent, older roofs are frequently handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help.
The streets around a church like Church of St Mary the Virgin are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

What we can’t see
No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
- Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will recommend the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
Why get it checked now?
On a tall building, problems are often found only when water comes in. By that stage the damage has spread inside. A drone survey finds them sooner. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

The survey, step by step
We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. The survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Hollow Street can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
