  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying

About our drone roof survey in Holmbury St Mary

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone is not the right tool, we’ll say so. We survey large and complex roofs, fragile roofs and chimney stacks, and the problems we are asked to look at most are vegetation in valleys and gutters and blocked valleys and parapet gutters.

Somewhere as small as Holmbury St Mary, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Tips from our surveys

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:

  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Check the loft can be reached

If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. The photos show the location and extent of every problem.

Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone can show exactly what has moved.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Holmbury St Mary

Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

Take a building like Belmont Prep School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. For an older house near a landmark such as St Mary The Virgins Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. With Polesden Lacey about 4.8 miles north, the area around Holmbury St Mary has a long history. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Common questions in Holmbury St Mary

How do I find out if my home in Holmbury St Mary is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Will you come out to Holmbury St Mary?

Yes, Holmbury St Mary is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

Does the drone show the underside of the roof?

No. It photographs the outside, not the inside. The loft space is checked separately, where there’s safe access, as damp and daylight frequently show there first.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

What’s the best way to book?

Simply phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.

DIY checks: what’s safe

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

How it works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It normally takes an hour or two at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a hamlet or village like Holmbury St Mary, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

Arrange a survey

Advice

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from ground level. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.
