Drones, thermal imaging and Home Farm roofs

An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Wooden Hill Primary and Nursery School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you run a business near The Lexicon, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

Home Farm is about 1 mile north-east of Crowthorne, in Bracknell Forest. Surveys in Home Farm work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. We cover towns and villages across Bracknell Forest. There is also a page for Reading.

About our drone roof survey in Home Farm

Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it is worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. We survey large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and the problems we are asked to look at most are moss building up on slopes and in gutters and hidden gutters full of leaves.

Somewhere as small as Home Farm, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned in advance. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

Home Farm questions

Is my home in Home Farm listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Home Farm?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

What does the report include?

A written report with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, by urgency where it matters. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. Photos are part of every report.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or email us.

How the survey changes by roof type

Ridges and hips

Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. We record what we see of their condition.

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We don’t test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

What this survey can’t tell you

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we look at

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks

Checking the roof from ground level

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Home Farm

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. From the ground, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Flashings that have come away

If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Michael and St Mary Magdalene's Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

What to expect from a roof survey

How the survey works

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect what can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes between one and two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Cottages and farmhouses around Home Farm often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Advice

Why it is worth a survey now in Home Farm

It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. You get photos of every part we can see. That helps you put the work in order. Outbuildings and barns around Home Farm are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, including VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
