Knockholt Pound: your questions answered
Is my home in Knockholt Pound listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is Knockholt Pound within the area you cover?
Yes. Knockholt Pound is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
How long does a drone roof survey take?
It normally takes between one and two hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. That includes the checks before the drone goes up.
What if my home is near an airport?
Only with the right permission. Airports like Gatwick, Luton and Southampton have flight restriction zones, and a flight inside one needs the airport’s or air traffic control’s say-so. Without it, we inspect from other safe viewpoints.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
What do I do with the report?
The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.
Drone roof survey in Knockholt Pound: what you get
Drone roof surveys are available in Knockholt Pound and throughout London and the South East, where the airspace and the weather allow. We fly on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. You get a written report with close-up photographs and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address. If you’ve noticed flashings that have come away and slipped or missing slates on a high roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Older buildings in small places like Knockholt Pound may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

When you need someone else
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before booking. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Large and complex roofs
How the survey changes by roof type
Valleys and parapet gutters
Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.
Large commercial roofs
Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. A drone keeps everyone off them.
What we do, step by step
We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a small place like Knockholt Pound, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
Before the survey
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
For landlords and managing agents
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the survey around it.
For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan.
Drones, thermal imaging and Knockholt Pound roofs
Down House, about 3.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Knockholt Pound. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.
For an older house near a landmark such as St Katharine's Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Halstead Community Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Leave it or get it looked at?
It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. You get photographs of every part we can see. You can tackle the urgent items first. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
