How a drone roof survey works in Orsett
Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. Common reasons to book are ridge and hip pieces working loose and worn lead at chimneys and walls, across flat roofs on upper floors, large and complex roofs and chimney stacks.
Older buildings in small places like Orsett may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

What a drone roof survey does not cover
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

Orsett: your questions answered
Is my home in Orsett listed or in a conservation area?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
Are there drone restrictions around Orsett?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
How much is a survey?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, confirmed before anything is booked.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it is safe. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
What we do, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect what can safely be seen, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey usually takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Cottages and farmhouses around Orsett frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Drones, thermal imaging and Orsett roofs
Orsett is within about 4 miles of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.
Take a building like Orsett Church of England Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Ealing Broadway Centre, big, flat commercial roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help most. The streets around a church such as St Giles & All Saints Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Orsett is about 2 miles north-east of Grays, in Thurrock. We visit Orsett as part of our work across Thurrock, for homes and businesses alike. Orsett is one of the places in Thurrock we cover. Chelmsford is in our area too.

What we look for on each type of roof
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep roofs are risky to walk on. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.
Flat roofs on tall buildings
The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.
Tips that help
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Book early if you’re near an airport
- Let us know the exact address as you book
- Make sure the loft can be reached
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.
Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.
Why it is worth a survey now in Orsett
Close-up photos make conversations with roofers clearer. You can show exactly where the problem is. In a small place like Orsett, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
