About our drone roof survey in Southfields
Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We survey tall and steep roofs, fragile roofs and large and complex roofs, and people most frequently book us about debris building up in hidden gutters and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below.
Some older homes in villages like Southfields are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

How we price drone roof surveys
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
- Whether it is a home or a commercial building
- Roof area
- Height and safe access
A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.
What we need to know
To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
- Anything about access we should know
Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
Questions from Southfields
How do I find out if my home in Southfields is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Are there drone restrictions around Southfields?
Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
What does a roof survey cost?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for your survey before booking. To get a price, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We inspect what can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
What happens after the survey?
You receive the written report by email, with photos and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Surveys run seven days a week. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
When you need someone else
It is a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we look at
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Fragile roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
Leave it or get it looked at?
Photographing a roof from the air does not touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Older cottages and farmhouses around Southfields can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photographs and findings. You can ask about anything that isn’t clear.
Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, so small faults are dealt with early.
What we’re asked to look at in Southfields
Steep and tall roofs are hard to inspect safely. Three-storey houses, blocks of flats and tall commercial buildings are common examples. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.
It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Flashings that have come away
- Wind damage high on the roof
- Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
Take an older house close to St Giles & All Saints Church: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.
Questions to ask before booking
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- How soon the report will arrive
The survey, step by step
You don’t need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll take it from there. The survey itself takes an hour or two for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a hamlet or village like Southfields, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

Advice
Drone roof surveys around Southfields
Southfields lies within about 3 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.
Anyone responsible for a site like Orsett Church of England Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you run a business near Ealing Broadway Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.
