How a drone roof survey works in Pevensey Bay

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. We keep the camera on the roof we are surveying, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we’re there to survey. If you’ve noticed plant growth and moss on the roof and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In smaller places like Pevensey Bay, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from the ground. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day. Even so, a close-up image frequently shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from ground level misses.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

The survey, step by step

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photos. On timing, it usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Being in a smaller place like Pevensey Bay does not change how the visit works: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Tell us about parking before the day

Leave it or get it looked at?

Small defects on a high roof grow with each storm. Finding them now means less to put right. With lower homes, common in places like Pevensey Bay, there’s little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Finding the cause first saves a second job inside.

Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and which survey you book.

Drone roof surveys in Pevensey Bay: local notes

Pevensey Bay is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

Take a building like Pevensey and Westham CofE Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Common questions in Pevensey Bay

Is Pevensey Bay within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Is my home in Pevensey Bay listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Can the drone do thermal imaging?

Our drone takes close-up photos of the roof. Thermal imaging is carried out separately, and it is part of the Premium Survey.

How soon will I get the report?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email, ready to forward.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.

Can you survey a roof inside a flight restriction zone?

Sometimes, with permission. Confirmed flight restriction zones include Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Stansted, Luton and Southampton, among others, and a flight inside one needs the airport’s or air traffic control’s say-so. Without it, we inspect from other safe viewpoints.

What about my neighbours’ privacy?

We take care around neighbouring homes. We photograph your roof, not your neighbours’ property. Letting neighbours know in advance helps.

When to book a survey in Pevensey Bay

Many roofs are never seen properly from the ground. You cannot see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years, which is why owners turn to a drone.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack

If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near St Wilfrid's Church Pevensey Bay, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What experience they bring
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?

What’s in a roof survey

How we price drone roof surveys

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.

What we need to know

If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:

  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. Each defect is photographed for the report.

Large commercial roofs

Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. A drone keeps everyone off them.

Practical tips

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared

Keep the photos with your property records. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys.

Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Take photos of any changes.
