Drone roof surveys near Russ Hill

About our drone roof survey in Russ Hill

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs cannot always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. We are often asked to look into worn lead at chimneys and walls and ridge pieces that have lifted, across valleys and parapet gutters, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs.

Some older homes in villages like Russ Hill are listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

How the survey works

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. All told, expect about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Somewhere as small as Russ Hill, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Advice

What we’re asked to look at in Russ Hill

Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Older slates and tiles break easily, and some sheet roofs are fragile. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Outlets choked with leaves and silt
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge

If you look after a building such as Charlwood Village Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Will the report include photos?
  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • What experience they bring
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey

What to expect from a roof survey

What we can’t see

Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs
  • Large and complex roofs

Drones, thermal imaging and Russ Hill roofs

Russ Hill is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Gatwick Airport. We ask the airport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it’s given. In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Church of St Nicholas, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. If you run a business near County Mall, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

Russ Hill: your questions answered

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Russ Hill?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Russ Hill is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Gatwick Airport. We ask the airport for permission before flying there, and only fly if it is given. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Russ Hill?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Does the report include photos?

Yes, plenty. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We can only inspect what we are given access to.

How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Russ Hill?

To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know the address and what you need to know. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.

What’s in the report?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. We record what we find with photos.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Valleys and parapet gutters are hidden from the street. A drone shows linings, joints and build-ups of debris.

Tips that help

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Book early if you are near an airport
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Tell us about any leaks or concerns

File the report and photos with your home documents. They give you something to compare against later.

Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
