Drone roof survey in Sandgate

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from the ground. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, like old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Before the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. We survey large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are storm damage on steep or tall roofs and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots.

Older buildings in small places like Sandgate may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

The survey, step by step

We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Older roofs in small places like Sandgate can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 inc. VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Tips from our surveys

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. A few suggestions:

  • Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, particularly in autumn. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Drones, thermal imaging and Sandgate roofs

Sandgate is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour. Historic houses such as Acrise Place, about 4.4 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Sandgate goes. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

The streets around a church like Church of St Paul are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Sandgate means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it’s worth knowing the roof’s condition. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Folkestone School for Girls, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

You’ll get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
