How a drone roof survey works in Tower Hamlets

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We do not fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. If you’re worried about vegetation in valleys and gutters and lifted or split lead flashings, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Around Tower Hamlets, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. Thermal patterns and close-up photos together give a fuller picture of the roof. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put by urgency where it matters.

How it works

The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit normally takes an hour or two for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. A visit to a smaller place like Tower Hamlets is no different on the day: we look from ground level, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. It helps to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

How to prepare

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

When to book a survey in Tower Hamlets

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are frequently invisible from below. Close-up drone photos show their condition.

Typical things we are asked to look at include:

  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters

If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter and St Paul, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • What the report includes, and whether it has photos
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?

What a good roof survey covers

Why it’s worth a survey now in Tower Hamlets

Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. Close-up photos show what’s really there, slope by slope. Seeing the problem makes it easier to decide what to do. Homes in smaller places like Tower Hamlets can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Wind gets under it and lifts more, and water follows.

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, including VAT, and we can help you choose.

Why book us in Tower Hamlets

  • Packages from £150, inc. VAT
  • A sub-250g drone, flown with a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • An independent view of the roof
  • Surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays

When you need someone else

To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.

Chimney stacks

The top of a stack is normally out of view. Close-up photos show the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.

Drone roof surveys in Tower Hamlets: local notes

Tower Hamlets lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so check with the council.

Hotels and guest houses near Tower Hamlets can’t easily close rooms for a leak, so it pays to find faults before guests do. Take a building like Priory Fields School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Tower Hamlets is about 1 mile south of Dover, in Kent. Bookings from Tower Hamlets are handled just like any other: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Our Kent coverage includes Tower Hamlets and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Canterbury page.

For a walk, there’s Dover Western Heights.

Useful tips for Tower Hamlets property owners

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • A word with neighbours beforehand helps

Keep the photos with your property records. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, and early repairs keep water out.
