How a drone roof survey works in West Cliffe

We carry out drone roof surveys in West Cliffe and across London and South East England, where the airspace and the weather allow. Flights take place on weekdays and at weekends. Every address is checked for airspace restrictions first. You get a written report with close-up photos and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, call 07833 053749 or email us with the address. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, large and complex roofs and chimney stacks, and people most often book us about eroded pointing on a chimney stack and ridge and hip pieces working loose.

Some older homes in villages like West Cliffe are listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

What we do, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. It usually takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Older rural homes like those around West Cliffe can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
  5. You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Leave side gates unlocked

Practical tips

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
  • Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace

The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. The photos show the location and extent of every problem.

Every so frequently, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.

Drones, thermal imaging and West Cliffe roofs

West Cliffe lies within about 2 miles of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. About 3.8 miles north-east lies Walmer Castle, a reminder of how long the area around West Cliffe has been built on. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Take a building like St Margaret's-at-Cliffe Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Roof by roof

Flat roofs on tall buildings

The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.

West Cliffe questions

Is my home in West Cliffe listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Will you come out to West Cliffe?

Yes, West Cliffe is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only if it’s safe. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

What’s in the report?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.

Will I get photos?

Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

Does your drone take thermal images?

No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey, and its findings are checked with moisture readings.

Does the weather affect a drone survey?

The flight waits for better weather. Wind and heavy rain are the two things that ground a small drone, so we’d move the date with you.

Why get it checked now?

Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. Close-up photos show what’s really there. Seeing the problem makes it easier to decide what to do. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.
