Scarborough Drone Roof Survey
Drone roof surveys around Scarborough, with a written report you can act on. Weekday and weekend visits available.
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
Can I check my roof myself?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in.
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
About our drone roof survey in Scarborough
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We do not fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. If you’ve noticed cracked mortar along the ridge and coverings that have slipped high up on the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on chimney stacks, fragile roofs and tall and steep roofs alike.
Somewhere as small as Scarborough, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

Why act early in Scarborough
Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. A drone replaces that guesswork with clear photos. Seeing the problem makes it easier to decide what to do. Older cottages and farmhouses around Scarborough can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.

When you need someone else

- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
- Photos in conditions too poor to fly
- A flight where airspace permission is refused

Booking your survey
Before you get in touch, it helps to have:
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
We survey roofs on weekdays and at weekends. To find a date that works for you, call 07833 053749 or email us.
Common roof problems in Scarborough
Many roofs are never seen properly from ground level. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Problems in those places often go unseen until they leak, which is why owners turn to a drone.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
- Damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below
- Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
- Lifted or split lead flashings
If you look after a building such as Burham Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
What to check before booking
- Is VAT included in the price?
- What experience they bring
- What insurance they carry
- Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one

Drones, thermal imaging and Scarborough roofs
Scarborough is about 2 miles from Rochester Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. With Starkey Castle about 1.7 miles north, Scarborough sits in an area with a long building history. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
The streets around a church such as St Mary's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. Shop and office owners around Pentagon Shopping Centre may find that thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof.

FAQs for Scarborough
Is Scarborough within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Is drone flying allowed in Scarborough?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Rochester Airport is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
What happens next?
You’ll get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.
Are you insured?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.
What we do, step by step
Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes an hour or two at a typical home, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. Rural addresses near Scarborough can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
- We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Check we can get to the back of the property
