About drone roof surveys in Medway

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. The photos go into a written report. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. Common reasons to book are eroded pointing on a chimney stack and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, across large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and fragile roofs.

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof cannot be seen, the report says so. The survey normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Near you in Gillingham

Typical jobs here are in homes near The Robert Napier School, Featherby Junior School and The Robert Napier School and the streets around them. Other local landmarks include Holy Trinity Church (within half a mile north-east), The Star pub (0.6 miles west) and Ambley Wood (0.8 miles south). For rail, the closest station is Gillingham (Kent) station, about 1.5 miles north-west. Well-known places in the area include Medway Maritime Hospital (1.6 miles west) and Six Poor Travellers House (3.3 miles west). Not far away are Blue Bell Hill and Bishop Saltings.

Drone roof surveys across Medway: local notes

Weather matters for both drones and thermal imaging across Medway: calm, dry conditions suit both drone flights and thermal images.

We work right across London and the South East, from the Isle of Wight to Hertfordshire, Medway included. We survey on any day of the week. Some of Medway sits close to the sea, so the weather on the day matters more for drone flights and roof access. If conditions are not right, the visit moves to a calmer day.

Gillingham: If you run a business near Pentagon Shopping Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. Restoration House lies about 3.3 miles west, so building around Gillingham goes back a long way. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

What this survey can’t tell you

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission
  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)

DIY checks: what’s safe

You can learn a lot from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book.

Roof by roof

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. Photos show how the covering is wearing.

Chimney stacks

The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We’ll say if a specialist is needed.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:

  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Height and safe access
  • House, block, shop or office
  • The shape of the roof and its details

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £400, including VAT.

What to tell us when you contact us

We will normally ask about:

  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • The address and postcode of the property

Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or email us, and we will ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.

Signs you need a drone roof survey

Many roofs are never seen properly from ground level. You cannot see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years, which is why owners turn to a drone.

It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof

Medway: your questions answered

Is this a RICS survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Can the drone do thermal imaging?

The drone survey is a photographic inspection. Thermal imaging is a separate check, included in our Premium Survey.

Are you registered with the CAA?

Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The drone we use weighs under 250g, flown within the rules for the open category.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

Does the weather affect a drone survey?

We don’t fly in high wind or heavy rain. The weather on the day decides whether the drone goes up. If we can’t fly, we will arrange another day or inspect by other means.
