Can I check my roof myself?

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey.

How a drone roof survey works in Allhallows-on-Sea

Before any flight, we check the airspace. Flight restriction zones around airports like Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and tell you. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. Typical surveys look at lifted or split lead flashings and wind damage high on the roof, on large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and fragile roofs.

Somewhere as small as Allhallows-on-Sea, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

When to book a survey in Allhallows-on-Sea

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Blocked valleys and parapet gutters
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles

Take a building like Allhallows Primary Academy: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Before you book anyone

  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

What a roof survey includes

How the survey works

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. If you have questions on the day, just ask. In a small place like Allhallows-on-Sea, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are looked at.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Different roofs, different checks

Valleys and parapet gutters

Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. It’s almost impossible to see from the ground, but a drone shows it clearly.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roofs on tall buildings are often seen by nobody. From above, standing water, splits and tired upstands are clear.

Allhallows-on-Sea: your questions answered

Will you come out to Allhallows-on-Sea?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

How do I find out if my home in Allhallows-on-Sea is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Are there drone restrictions in central London?

Some areas need permission from NATS before any flight. Where we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points and explain what we could see.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose, confirmed before anything is booked.

What if it’s windy or raining on the day?

Bad weather means no flight. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so a new date is agreed with you, or look from other safe viewpoints if you’d rather.

How long does a drone roof survey take?

The visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. We will give you an idea of timing as you book.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Allhallows-on-Sea

Allhallows-on-Sea is within about 1 mile of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

The streets around a church such as Church of All Saints are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.
