Drone roof survey in Lower Bush

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. We’re often asked to look into ridge pieces that have lifted and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below, on chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and fragile roofs.

Older buildings in small places like Lower Bush may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

The survey, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes about 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a hamlet or village like Lower Bush, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Advice

Questions from Lower Bush

Is my home in Lower Bush listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Lower Bush?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

Are you insured?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest.

What will the report tell me?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Drones, thermal imaging and Lower Bush roofs

Historic houses such as Starkey Castle, about 1.4 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Lower Bush goes. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons.

If you run a business near Pentagon Shopping Centre, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Michael and All Angels, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Lower Bush?

From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. You cannot see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Plant growth and moss on the roof

If you look after a building like Cuxton Community Infant School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What the survey will not cover
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?

What a roof survey includes

Checking the roof from the ground

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we check the roof.

What we can’t see

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

  • Large and complex roofs
