Drone roof survey in Sopwell

Drone roof surveys are available in Sopwell and throughout London and South East England, where the airspace and the weather allow. We fly seven days a week. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. You get a written report with close-up photos and recommendations. To check whether your roof suits a drone survey, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are debris building up in hidden gutters and slipped or missing slates on a high roof.

Older cottages and houses around Sopwell may have little insulation, and some have extensions with their own roofs. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Calm, dry weather suits both methods, so the date is set with the forecast in mind.

We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

Sopwell: your questions answered

Are there drone restrictions around Sopwell?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Do you cover smaller places like Sopwell?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

Do you look in the roof space?

If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.

What does the report include?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.

What does a roof survey cost?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. We confirm the exact price before you book. To get a price, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We point out what can be seen, like sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

How the survey works

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes about 1–2 hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. In a smaller place like Sopwell, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Advice

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we’ll tell you.

Ridges and hips

Ridges may be bedded in mortar or mechanically fixed. Their condition is noted in the report.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Sopwell

Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Sopwell has a number of hotels within about a mile and a half. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.

Batchwood Hall lies about 2.1 miles north-west, so building around Sopwell goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Sopwell means lost rooms as well as repairs, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

Sopwell is about 1 mile south of St Albans, in Hertfordshire. Roofs in Sopwell get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Hertfordshire. Our Hertfordshire coverage includes Sopwell and the places around it. You can also see our page for London.

What a survey costs

To price your survey, we check:

  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • The shape of the roof and its details

The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT.

Getting in touch

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:

  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • What’s prompted the survey

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, and you can call 07833 053749 or send us an email to find out.

What we can’t see

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and does not.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks

Why act early in Sopwell

Planning roof work without seeing the roof is a gamble. You get photographs of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. Arranging work in a smaller place like Sopwell is easier with notice than in an emergency. A survey gives you that notice.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.

What we’re asked to look at in Sopwell

The top of a stack is the most exposed part of many roofs. From ground level, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. A drone gets close enough to see them in detail.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Lead work pulling away at abutments

Take an older house close to St. Julian's Church: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
