Flying and imaging in South Earlswood

The flight restriction zone around Redhill Aerodrome covers South Earlswood, or comes right up to its edge. Before any flight there, we ask the aerodrome for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it is given. Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Salfords Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near The Belfry, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from the air or with a thermal camera.

South Earlswood is about 2 miles south of Redhill, in Surrey. We survey roofs in South Earlswood as part of our work across London and South East England. South Earlswood is one of the places in Surrey where we work. Our Crawley page covers surveys nearby.

We survey roofs across the RH1 postcode area for drone roof surveys. If you need a drone roof survey at a property on Maple Road, Heston Road and Horley Road or a nearby road, we can survey it. If you’re just outside South Earlswood, we cover Earlswood (1 mile north), Salfords (1 mile south), Meadvale (1 mile north-west), Redhill (2 miles north) and South Nutfield (2 miles north-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Epsom (9 miles north-west), Ewell (10 miles north), Caterham (6 miles north-east), Dorking (7 miles west), Ashtead (9 miles north-west) and Leatherhead (9 miles north-west).

Not far away are Mercers Lake and Colley Hill.

How a drone roof survey works in South Earlswood

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. Everything we find goes into a written report with photographs. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We survey chimney stacks, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are lead work pulling away at abutments and chimney tops in poor condition.

Somewhere as small as South Earlswood, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

How we price drone roof surveys

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Which survey package you book
  • Height and safe access
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, which starts from £400, including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Helping us price your survey

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Any marks or damp showing indoors
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Anything about access we should know

Unsure which package suits your roof? The easiest way is to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll explain the options and the price.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in South Earlswood

Is drone flying allowed in South Earlswood?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. South Earlswood is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Redhill Aerodrome. We ask the aerodrome for permission before flying there, and only fly if it’s given. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Do you cover smaller places like South Earlswood?

Yes. South Earlswood is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We will talk about access when you book.

What do I do with the report?

You receive the written report by email, with photos and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

What insurance do you have?

Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

How experienced are you?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.

Tips from our surveys

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • Book early if you are near an airport
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Tell us about any leaks or concerns

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.

Every so frequently, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.

What you can safely check yourself

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we look at the roof.

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

From the air, a lean or a loose pot is easy to see. We record what we find with photos.

Valleys and parapet gutters

When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

What we do, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Older rural homes like those around South Earlswood can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Jot down any questions you want answered

Common roof problems in South Earlswood

Parapet gutters, box gutters and central valleys sit out of sight. Debris collects where nobody looks, until water overflows inside. A drone shows them clearly from above.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls
  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Ponding and splits on a high flat roof
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Christ the King, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • How soon the report will arrive
