About our drone roof survey in South Stour
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where it applies, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. There’s a 12-month follow-up as well. If a drone will not help on your roof, we will say so. Every drone survey comes with a written report and close-up photographs. We’re often asked to look into moss and weeds taking hold up top and slates or tiles shifted by high winds, across chimney stacks, valleys and parapet gutters and tall and steep roofs.
Villages like South Stour often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

How it works
We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a village or hamlet like South Stour, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Find any records of previous roof work
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property

Advice
When you need someone else
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe

South Stour: your questions answered
Is drone flying allowed in South Stour?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Is my home in South Stour listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Will you check the loft?
If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.
How soon will I get the report?
Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, let us know when booking.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
Are you insured?
We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Airspace, weather and South Stour roofs
We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. About 4.8 miles north-west lies Godinton House, a reminder of how long the area around South Stour has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you look after a building such as Finberry Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Common roof problems in South Stour
Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. From ground level, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. Close-up drone photos show their condition.
A survey can pick up problems like:
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Debris building up in hidden gutters
- Lead work pulling away at abutments
If you run a business near Ashford Designer Outlet, big, flat commercial roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help most.

What you can safely check yourself
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.
What we look for on each type of roof
Chimney stacks
Leaning stacks and loose pots are easier to judge from above. Each defect is photographed for the report.
Valleys and parapet gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. You can’t see it from the street at all, but a drone shows it clearly.
