Storm damage roof report in South Stour
Most policies do not cover wear and tear. That makes the difference between storm damage and old wear important. Our report records both: recent damage alongside any older defects, like nail fatigue on slates or eroded pointing. We describe what we see, whichever way it points. How the policy applies is for your insurer to decide. If you’re worried about holes or cracks caused by debris and damaged pots on the stack, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Being in a small place like South Stour makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Checking the roof from the ground
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Before and after the survey
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Check how your policy defines a storm
- Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
- Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it is safe to do so
- Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
Your insurer may send a loss adjuster to look at the damage. You’ll have your own independent record to refer to.
Check the roof from the ground after strong winds. With binoculars, you can frequently spot problems without climbing. Never climb onto the roof yourself.
What affects the price in South Stour
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. This is what makes a difference:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Roof area
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Getting in touch
We will typically ask about:
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Your timetable, such as an exchange date
- The kind of building and roof involved
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
When you’re ready to go ahead, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.
What we cannot see
A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:
- Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
- Repair costs or quotes for the work
- The outcome of a claim
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.
What we check
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs
- Slate and tile slopes
- Flashings
- Ridges and hips
- Gutters and fascias
What happens on the day
We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. In a hamlet or village like South Stour, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
Before the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice
Questions from South Stour
Do you cover South Stour?
Yes, South Stour is within the area we cover. We work right across London and South East England. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details.
Do you cover smaller places like South Stour?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
How do I book a survey in South Stour?
To book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Can I check the roof after a storm?
Only from the ground or from windows. Don’t use a ladder or go onto the roof. Binoculars can help you see damage from below and we will inspect the rest from safe positions.
What if the roof was already worn?
Wear and tear is not usually covered. We describe what looks like fresh storm damage and what looks older. Your insurer decides the claim.
What do I do if water is coming in?
Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. If it is safe, photograph the damage before it’s covered. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.
Landlords, agents and block managers in South Stour
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer, so they’re priced to suit.
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. We survey seven days a week, which helps when tenants work during the week.
Wind, rain and roofs in South Stour
Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. You’ll also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. With Godinton House about 4.8 miles north-west, South Stour sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
For businesses in and around places like Ashford Designer Outlet, finding where water is getting in quickly keeps disruption down. Anyone responsible for a site like Finberry Primary School will know that a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you own a rental within reach of Ashford International station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.
