About our storm damage roof report in Ridgeway

After a storm, it is useful to have a clear record of what happened to your roof. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We aren’t loss adjusters, and we can’t say whether a claim will be paid. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. We are often asked to look into torn or lifted flat roof coverings and stains appearing after strong winds, on flashings, gutters and fascias and ridges and hips.

Somewhere as small as Ridgeway, older roofs have often been repaired many times. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, and the difference matters, particularly to an insurer. We check whatever is safely visible and set out what we find. Damp in old walls and timbers is slow to dry, so the sooner the cause is found the better.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photo. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

What we’re asked to look at in Ridgeway

Branches and trees frequently come down on roofs during storms. We record the damage and where it is, with photographs.

Things that often lead to a survey include:

  • Flat roof edges peeled back
  • Slates and tiles blown off the roof
  • Stains appearing after strong winds
  • Damaged ridges and hips

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mary, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • Their report turnaround times
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included

Ridgeway questions

Is Ridgeway in the area you cover?

Yes, Ridgeway is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Ridgeway as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

How do I find out if my home in Ridgeway is listed?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.

Do you act for me with my insurer?

No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

That is not something we can promise. The decision rests with your insurer and its policy. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause.

How are storm damage reports priced?

Our reports start from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs are not part of the report.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Ridgeway

Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. You will also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. About 3.6 miles south-east lies Westenhanger Castle, a reminder of how long the area around Ridgeway has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.

Shop and office owners around Ashford Designer Outlet may find that a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters. Anyone responsible for a site like Smeeth Community Primary School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Ridgeway is about 4 miles east of Ashford, in Kent. Ridgeway is part of the area we cover and the surrounding area across London and South East England. Our area takes in places right across Kent, from the larger towns to small villages. There’s also a page for Canterbury.

Can I check my roof myself?

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.

Roof by roof

Flat roof coverings

Lifted trims and laps are common after a storm. We check whether the damage is recent or older.

Chimney stacks

Pots, cowls and aerials on chimneys can be damaged or dislodged in a storm. The report notes any damage to the stack.

Why it is worth a survey now in Ridgeway

Many policies expect damage to be reported promptly. Let your insurer know early, and check what your policy asks for. Our report can then add a clear record. For an older or listed building in a place like Ridgeway, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

How it works

Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. For a village or hamlet like Ridgeway, the journey is planned in advance: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. We look at the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.
