Drone roof surveys in Stede Quarter

Drone roof survey in Stede Quarter: what you get

Drones need reasonable weather. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We are often asked to look into coverings that have slipped high up on the roof and slates or tiles shifted by high winds, across flat roofs on upper floors, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

In a small place like Stede Quarter, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Before and after the survey

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Make sure the loft can be reached

There’s a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It helps you see how the roof has changed over the year.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, so small faults are dealt with early.

When to book a survey in Stede Quarter

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. We fly from ground level and bring the camera close to the roof.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Lifted or split lead flashings

Around Stede Quarter, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.

What to check before booking

  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one

What to expect from a roof survey

Drones, thermal imaging and Stede Quarter roofs

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent.

Wherever the property is around Stede Quarter, the approach is the same: a careful look and a clear explanation.

Stede Quarter questions

How do I find out if my home in Stede Quarter is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Is Stede Quarter within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

What happens after the survey?

The report arrives by email. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.

How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Stede Quarter?

Simply phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.

Can you survey a roof inside a flight restriction zone?

Flight restriction zones around protected airports need permission from the airport or air traffic control before any flight. We check the airspace for your address and seek permission where it’s needed. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only if it is safe. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.

Can I check my roof myself?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Roof by roof

Valleys and parapet gutters

Blocked outlets in hidden gutters cause many leaks. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.

Large commercial roofs

Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. A drone keeps everyone off them.

What happens on the day

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. For a village or hamlet like Stede Quarter, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
