Drone roof surveys for Stubb's Cross homes and businesses

Drone roof survey in Stubb's Cross: what you get

A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it is worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we’re there to survey. Common reasons to book are cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below, across fragile roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs.

Somewhere as small as Stubb's Cross, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What happens on the day

Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Around Stubb's Cross, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

What we look for on each type of roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. From the air, every course of slates or tiles can be seen.

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. You can’t see it from the street at all, but a drone shows it clearly.

Drones, thermal imaging and Stubb's Cross roofs

About 3.3 miles north lies Godinton House, a reminder of how long the area around Stubb's Cross has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

If you run a business near Ashford Designer Outlet, big, flat commercial roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help most. The streets around a church such as St Francis are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps. Take a building like Kingsnorth Church of England Primary School: big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Questions from Stubb's Cross

Are there drone restrictions around Stubb's Cross?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Will you come out to Stubb's Cross?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Usually, if there is one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed.

How soon will I get the report?

That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Stubb's Cross

It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. You get photos of every part we can see. You can tackle the urgent items first. Older cottages and farmhouses around Stubb's Cross can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, inc. VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You’ll know the price for the job before booking.

Can I check my roof myself?

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
