How a drone roof survey works in Waldron
A drone shows the outside of a roof very well, but it cannot see inside. We check the loft from inside where it is safe, because the underside tells its own story. Inside and out together tell you far more. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. Where the loft cannot be reached safely, we note it. If you are worried about cracked mortar along the ridge and lead work pulling away at abutments, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Older buildings in small places like Waldron may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later.

What this survey cannot tell you
We only report whatever is safely visible on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- A structural engineer’s report
- Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and does not.
Roof types and parts we check
- Large and complex roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Fragile roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
Why act early in Waldron
A drone record gives you a baseline. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It is useful for planning maintenance over the years. In a place like Waldron, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Prices start from £400, including VAT.

Roof by roof
Large commercial roofs
Many commercial roofs have fragile sheets or roof lights. A drone keeps everyone off them.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Widespread slipping on slate typically means nail fatigue. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.
What we do, step by step
We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. In total, it takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Waldron can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
- We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Advice
Checking the roof from the ground
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Tips that help
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:
- Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
- Book early if you’re near an airport
The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, especially in autumn. On high roofs, leave clearing to a professional. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
Drone roof surveys around Waldron
Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.
For any home in Waldron, it’s the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right. Take an older house close to The Parish Church of All Saints: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Waldron questions
How do I find out if my home in Waldron is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is drone flying allowed in Waldron?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Can you survey in bad weather?
Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drones cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. We’ll rearrange with you if the weather is not right.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
What does a roof survey cost?
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, inc. VAT.
