Drone roof surveys in Water Stratford: local notes

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. Some villages in Buckinghamshire still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Giles, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Stowe House lies about 2.3 miles north-east, so building around Water Stratford goes back a long way. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

Water Stratford is about 3 miles west of Buckingham, in Buckinghamshire. In Water Stratford, as across Buckinghamshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Water Stratford is one of the places in Buckinghamshire where we work. For surveys nearby, see our Milton Keynes page.

How a drone roof survey works in Water Stratford

Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. We check the airspace for your address ahead of the visit. If a drone isn’t the right tool, we will say so. Typical surveys look at damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below and outlets choked with leaves and silt, on large and complex roofs, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs.

Older buildings in small places like Water Stratford may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that’s said too.

When you need someone else

Every survey has limits, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly
  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will point you to the right survey. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

What happens on the day

We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit normally takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere like Water Stratford needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Photographing a roof from the air does not touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so the survey doesn’t create new problems. For older village homes like those around Water Stratford, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Prices start from £150, inc. VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both including VAT. You will know the exact price before booking.

FAQs for Water Stratford

Do you cover smaller places like Water Stratford?

Yes, Water Stratford is covered. Our area covers London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Is my home in Water Stratford listed or in a conservation area?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report, and it does not include calculations. We will recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

Are you insured?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Will you photograph next door’s garden?

We take care around neighbouring homes. The camera is pointed at your roof, not next door. It is worth telling neighbours about the flight.

Can the drone do thermal imaging?

Not as part of the drone survey, which is about close-up photos. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from the freeholder or managing agent. We inspect only the parts we are allowed to reach.

Checking the roof from ground level

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

The drone shows the outside of the stack, and it isn’t a flue or gas safety check. We will say if a specialist is needed.

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.
