Practical tips

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Clear a spot on the drive or lawn
  • Expect us to rearrange if it is too windy or wet
  • Let us know the exact address as you book

We email the report to you, with close-up photographs from the flight. Each finding is explained in plain words, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.

Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.

How a drone roof survey works in Buckingham

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. We never fly where it isn’t safe. We are often asked to look into flat roofs on upper floors that hold water and loose ridge and hip tiles, on large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and chimney stacks.

In a town like Buckingham, the roofs that are hardest to see are frequently on taller buildings, steep slopes or the backs of terraces. Close-up drone photos and thermal images show what binoculars from the pavement can’t. Each needs the right weather, so the date is set with the forecast in mind. A typical example is the rear slope over a back addition, which cannot be seen from the street.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. A visit in Buckingham runs most smoothly with the loft hatch clear, side gates open and a parking spot in mind. If you will not be there yourself, let us know who will let us in.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about parking before the day
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

Advice

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from the ground. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. It is almost impossible to see from ground level, but it is plain to see from the air.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It helps when you plan ahead. Blocked gutters and downpipes on homes in Buckingham overflow onto walls. At roof level, a loose tile or tired flashing does the same. Left alone, both only get worse.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:

  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • Flights in high wind or heavy rain
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before booking. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs

Can I check my roof myself?

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

Drone roof surveys around Buckingham

Stowe House, about 2.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Buckingham. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.

For an older house near a landmark like St Peter and St Paul, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. If you look after a building like George Grenville Academy, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Common questions in Buckingham

Is Buckingham in the area you cover?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Buckingham?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We check everything that can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose, confirmed before anything is booked.

When does the report arrive?

Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and details are available on request.

What will the report tell me?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photos. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.
