Drone roof survey in West End, Hertfordshire
Drone roof surveys across West End, with over 20 years’ experience behind it. You get a clear report with photographs.
- Debris building up in hidden gutters
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
- Worn lead at chimneys and walls
For landlords and managing agents
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.
Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.
How a drone roof survey works in West End
We fly a sub-250g drone, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. We survey chimney stacks, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters, and people most frequently book us about lead work pulling away at abutments and blocked valleys and parapet gutters.
Villages like West End often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Photos show what each point refers to.

Checking the roof from the ground
Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
The survey, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take between one and two hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Around West End, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- We also look inside the loft space where it is safe.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- Let us know about parking near the property

Flying and imaging in West End
About 1.7 miles west lies Hatfield House, a reminder of how long the area around West End has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary the Virgin, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. For businesses in and around places such as Howard Centre, big, flat commercial roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images help most. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Essendon CofE (VC) Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
West End is about 3 miles east of Hatfield, in Hertfordshire. We cover West End and the rest of Hertfordshire. We cover towns and villages across Hertfordshire, large and small. You can also see our page for London.

We also work in nearby towns like Watford (12 miles south-west), Hemel Hempstead (12 miles west), Stevenage (10 miles north), St Albans (7 miles west), Welwyn Garden City (3 miles north) and Harpenden (9 miles north-west).
Around West End
Around West End, our work takes us to homes and buildings near Brookmans Park, The Candlestick pub and Onslow St Audrey's School and the streets around them. Well-known places in the area include The Bunker at Hatfield Police Station (2.9 miles west) and Howard Centre (3.1 miles north-west). The countryside around West End includes Gobions Wood.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Photographing a roof from the air does not touch it. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so the survey doesn’t create new problems. Around West End, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

West End: your questions answered
Is drone flying allowed in West End?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in West End?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
How experienced are you?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just let us know the days that suit you.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
