What a drone roof survey looks like in Westcliff-on-Sea

Westcliff-on-Sea lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. London Southend Airport is about 3 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight.

If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Westcliff-on-Sea, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition. Take an older house close to St Saviour's: older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

How a drone roof survey works in Westcliff-on-Sea

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe, such as old slate, clay tiles or cement sheets. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. We check the airspace for your address before the visit. We will tell you if another approach would work better. We are often asked to look into standing water on a flat roof and wind damage high on the roof, on chimney stacks, tall and steep roofs and valleys and parapet gutters.

Around Westcliff-on-Sea, lots of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images frequently show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from the ground.

You receive the findings by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on.

What this survey can’t tell you

A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:

  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Fragile roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. A visit to a smaller place like Westcliff-on-Sea is no different on the day: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. It helps to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we’re surveying.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it is safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

FAQs for Westcliff-on-Sea

Are there drone restrictions around Westcliff-on-Sea?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. London Southend Airport is about 3 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

How do I find out if my home in Westcliff-on-Sea is listed?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

How much does a drone roof survey cost in Westcliff-on-Sea?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose, confirmed before anything is booked.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

How long is the visit?

It typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. You will then get the report by email, on the timescale of your package.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey.

What we’re asked to look at in Westcliff-on-Sea

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. Close-up photos make it clear what has been disturbed.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
  • Lifted or split lead flashings

Take a building like St Bernard's High School and Arts College: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Their track record with similar roofs

What to expect from a roof survey

Different roofs, different checks

Large commercial roofs

Large commercial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone photographs the whole surface methodically.

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.
