Drone roof survey in Westmill, Hertfordshire
Close-up drone photographs of roofs that are hard to reach in Westmill. More than 5,000 surveys completed across London and South East England.
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
- Loose ridge and hip tiles
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
How the survey works
We’ll ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. The inspection then takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. For a village or hamlet like Westmill, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
- On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Tell us about parking before the day
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Westmill
Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. If you are worried about chimney tops in poor condition and hidden gutters full of leaves, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Westmill are listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.
Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Flying and imaging in Westmill
Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.
Take a building like Freman College: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Can I check my roof myself?
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Your questions about drone roof surveys in Westmill
How do I find out if my home in Westmill is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Westmill within the area you cover?
Yes. Westmill is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible.
Can you fly a drone in central London?
Parts of central London are restricted, including areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, where flights need permission from NATS. We check the airspace for your address and apply where needed.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only if it’s safe. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
Does the drone show the underside of the roof?
No. The drone photographs the outer surfaces, but not the loft or the underside. We look in the loft from inside where it is safe.
Will the drone film my neighbours?
The camera stays on your roof. We inspect only the roof you’ve asked about. A word with next door beforehand is a good idea.

- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

What we look for on each type of roof
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, EPDM rubber around 30 to 50 and GRP up to about 30. We record the signs of age we can see.
Chimney stacks
Our drone check of a chimney is visual, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we’ll tell you.
Practical tips
You do not need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
- Tell us the exact address when booking
- Shut pets inside while we fly
If you need work done, roofers can work from the photos. The photos show the location and extent of every problem.
Every so frequently, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside often shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
When you need someone else
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:
- Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
