About our drone roof survey in Wye
A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Each flight is kept short and stays focused on the roof we are there to survey. If you’ve noticed ridge pieces that have lifted and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Somewhere as small as Wye, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

Common questions in Wye
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Wye?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
How do I find out if my home in Wye is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
What does the report include?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, finishing with recommendations. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Do you look in the loft space?
If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when you book.

Drone roof surveys in Wye: local notes
We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near County Square, thermal images can show trapped moisture across a wide commercial roof. Godinton House, about 4.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Wye. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Lady Joanna Thornhill Endowed Primary School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.

With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To arrange surveys for several addresses, call 07833 053749 or email us with the addresses.
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.
How it works
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs, emailed to you. As for time on site, most surveys take an hour or two at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Older rural homes like those around Wye can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
- Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Tell us about parking before the day

Related advice
What we look for on each type of roof
Flat roofs on tall buildings
The flat roof on top of a block is rarely looked at. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.
Chimney stacks
The top of a stack is usually out of view. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
Leave it or get it looked at?
It is hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. You get photographs of every part we can see. That helps you put the work in order. Outbuildings and barns around Wye are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.

What a drone roof survey does not cover
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
- A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Fragile roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
Tips that help
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit, and whether work has done its job.
Every so frequently, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. The underside frequently shows problems before the outside does. Photograph anything new.
