Roof by roof
Steep slate and tile slopes
Widespread slipping on slate normally means nail fatigue. We can see the extent of it from above.
Ridges and hips
Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.
Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Folly Town
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. Our drone roof survey gets a camera close to them without anyone climbing. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that can’t be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. Common reasons to book are ridge and hip pieces working loose and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, on tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.
Somewhere as small as Folly Town, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Practical tips
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- Let us know about any leaks or concerns
- Book early if you’re near an airport
File the report and photos with your home documents. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys.
Keep the loft space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Check insulation does not block the airflow.
DIY checks: what’s safe
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.
It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Folly Town
It is hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. Our report shows the condition of each area, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. You can tackle the urgent items first. Around Folly Town, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

What we can’t see
A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:
- A structural engineer’s report
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
- A flight where airspace permission is refused
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we check
- Large and complex roofs
- Fragile roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Tall and steep roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Chimney stacks
How it works
A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take between one and two hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a hamlet or village like Folly Town, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
- You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.
How to prepare
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Advice
Folly Town questions
Will you come out to Folly Town?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Is drone flying allowed in Folly Town?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
Are you insured?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and details are available on request.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
What happens after the survey?
We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. It is yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Can you survey in bad weather?
It can, depending on the survey. Drones cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. If the conditions are not right, we’ll talk to you about another date.
Drones, thermal imaging and Folly Town roofs
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up aerial photos and thermal images help.
If you look after a building like Wye School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
