Flat roofs in East Studdal
The coast is about 4 miles or less from East Studdal, so there’s more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Coastal wind works at the edges of flat roofs, and salt air wears metal trims and fixings. With Walmer Castle about 3.6 miles east, East Studdal sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
For an older house near a landmark like East Studdal Church Hall, the joins between later flat roofs and the old walls are where problems normally start.
East Studdal is about 3 miles west of Deal, in Kent. East Studdal is part of the area we cover and the surrounding area across London and South East England. We cover towns and villages across Kent. Canterbury is in our area too.
We survey roofs across the CT15 postcode area for electronic leak detection and the streets around it. If you need electronic leak detection at a property on Stoneheap Road, Downs Close and Strakers Hill or anywhere close by, we can help. If you’re just outside East Studdal, we cover Studdal (1 mile south-west), Ashley (1 mile south-west), Sutton (1 mile east), West Langdon (1 mile south) and Martin (2 miles south-east). How electronic leak detection works in East Studdal
Electronic testing locates holes in the waterproofing, not every cause of water getting in. Leaks from walls, copings, rooflights or pipes need other checks. We will tell you if we think the leak is coming from somewhere else. It will not show water getting in through brickwork or around frames. The report makes clear what was and wasn’t tested. You’ll also know what to check next. If you’ve noticed repairs that haven’t stopped the leak and punctures from foot traffic or tools, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
In a small place like East Studdal, a flat roof can stand in the open, which is hard on edges, upstands and joins in the covering. Older felt roofs, frequently around 15–20 years in life, show it first. Rubber and GRP last longer, though trims and joints still need a look. Exposed edges are usually the first part of a flat roof to go.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the flat roof membrane, any defects and our written recommendations.

Can I check my roof myself?
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
What a survey costs
We confirm the exact price before you book. This is what makes a difference:
- Roof area
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the roof. We’ll confirm the figure before booking.
Getting in touch
To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:
- Anything about access we should know
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- What made you get in touch
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
Our phone lines are open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. To book or ask a question, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
When you need someone else
This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Some conductive membranes
- How wet the insulation is
- Parts of the roof covered by fixed equipment
If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we look at
- Roof terraces and balconies
- Liquid-applied waterproofing
- Commercial flat roofs
- Flat roof membranes
- Single-ply roofs
- Green roofs
What we’re asked to look at in East Studdal
Roofs covered with paving, ballast or planting hide the membrane. Electronic methods can help on some of these roofs, depending on the build-up.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Leaks under green or ballasted roofs
- Water coming in under a flat roof
- New roofs to check before paving or planting
- Failed seams and laps
If you let a flat or house near Martin Mill station, the flat roof over a let home is worth a look before it becomes a tenant complaint.

- Their drone registration, if they fly one

Common questions in East Studdal
Is my home in East Studdal listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will you come out to East Studdal?
Yes, East Studdal is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies.
How much time does ELD need?
The roof’s size and build-up decide how long it takes. You’ll know roughly how long before we start.
Is the repair part of the test?
No. We test the membrane and report. The report shows where each breach is for your roofer to repair.
Will you check the loft?
Where it’s relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.
How the survey changes by roof type
Bituminous membranes
Bitumen roofs can often be tested electronically though the layers below matter.
Single-ply membranes
Many offices and units have single-ply roofs. Seams and penetrations are typical breach points.
How the survey works
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll take it from there. A typical survey takes a length of time set by the size of the roof and how it’s built, which we’ll explain when we quote. Around East Studdal, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- You tell us about the roof and where water is showing.
- We check whether the membrane and build-up suit ELD.
- We choose a low-voltage or high-voltage method to match the roof.
- We test the roof and locate any breaches.
- You get a report with photos of each breach.
Preparing for the visit
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Keep pets in another room
- Jot down any questions you want answered
