Hurstbourne Tarrant Electronic Leak Detection
Electronic leak detection in Hurstbourne Tarrant and the rest of Hampshire. We survey seven days a week.
- Patched roofs that still leak
- Holes around roof penetrations
- A flat roof leak that cannot be traced
Different roofs, different checks
Bituminous membranes
Many flat roofs use bitumen-based membranes. Whether ELD suits them depends on the build-up.
Liquid-applied waterproofing
Testing a liquid-applied roof depends on what’s beneath the coating.
Electronic leak detection in Hurstbourne Tarrant
Our ELD testing covers flat roofs in Hurstbourne Tarrant and the rest of London and South East England. A visit normally takes longer on a large roof than a small one, with the construction of the roof playing a part too. Every roof is quoted on its size and build-up. The results come in a written report with photos. If you’ve noticed leaks through a covered membrane and leaks that return after repairs, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Flat roofs on exposed homes in small places like Hurstbourne Tarrant take more wind and rain, so edges, upstands and laps take a beating. Older felt roofs, frequently around 15–20 years in life, show it first. Rubber and GRP last longer, though trims and joints still need a look. On an exposed roof, the edges tend to go first.
We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Questions from Hurstbourne Tarrant
How do I find out if my home in Hurstbourne Tarrant is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you cover smaller places like Hurstbourne Tarrant?
Yes. Hurstbourne Tarrant is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
What is electronic leak detection?
The waterproofing membrane normally stops an electrical current, so wherever there’s a hole, it passes through. That lets us find breaches that are too small to see.
Which method do you use?
It depends on the membrane and the build-up. Low-voltage testing typically needs a wet surface, while high-voltage testing needs a dry, exposed membrane.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Does someone need to be in?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when you book.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
Flat and commercial roofs around Hurstbourne Tarrant
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Alongside them, flat-roofed extensions, dormers, garages and commercial units are common almost everywhere. If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
Landlords with a home close to Andover station may find that flat roofs on let property tend to be checked only when they fail, which is the costly way round. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Hurstbourne Tarrant Church of England Primary School, large flat roofs, common on schools and other public buildings, need their outlets, upstands and coverings checked regularly. If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter, later flat-roofed additions are common on older houses, and their edges and upstands often show the first signs of wear.

How it works
We will ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes more time on a big roof than a small one, with the construction of the roof playing a part too. Older roofs in small places like Hurstbourne Tarrant can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- First, we confirm which roof areas are included.
- We get the roof ready for testing.
- We work across the roof with the test equipment.
- Each breach found is located and recorded.
- You receive the results to pass to your roofer.
Before the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Checking the roof from ground level
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in.
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Useful tips for Hurstbourne Tarrant property owners
Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:
- Limit access to the roof
- Note where leaks show inside and when
- Test new membranes before covering them
- Ask contractors to protect the membrane
Where the evidence points to walls, copings or rooflights, we’ll note it, so other causes can be checked.
ELD before paving, ballast or planting goes on is worth considering. It’s easier to find holes before more layers are added.
What we can’t see
This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Fixing the holes we find
- Parts of the roof covered by fixed equipment
- Leaks from plumbing or windows
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.
