Gutter survey in Bursledon: what you get
Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. If they clog, drip or sag, the water ends up somewhere it shouldn’t and that typically means the walls or the inside of the building. Our survey looks at the whole rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. We are often asked to look into overflowing eaves gutters and rotten fascias or stained soffits, across valley gutters, parapet and box gutters and fascias and soffits.
Around Bursledon, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. On older homes, chimney stacks, valleys and gutters are usually where the work is, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. Nails and battens under older coverings frequently give out before the slates or tiles themselves.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Different roofs, different checks
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Many homes have plastic gutters and downpipes. Their joints can leak as the seals wear and brackets may drop under the weight of debris.
Box and secret gutters
A secret gutter is tucked under the slates or tiles at an abutment or valley and is easy to overlook. We check what’s visible and note what is not.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photographs included.
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.
FAQs for Bursledon
Do you cover smaller places like Bursledon?
Yes, Bursledon is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Is the coastal weather around Bursledon hard on roofs?
Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. To book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Will you look at parapet and box gutters as well?
Yes. These gutters frequently cause leaks indoors when they block so we pay close attention to them. Parts of them may not be visible, and we’ll note that in the report.
Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?
The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so the report covers what can be seen.
Do I need to be at home?
It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in; we will agree the details as you book.
Gutter surveys around Bursledon
Bursledon is within about 2 miles of the coast, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt is hard on nails, clips and metal flashings, and strong wind lifts anything already loose on a roof, while driving rain finds any gap. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
Homes near green spaces such as Westwood Woodland Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching. For an older house near a landmark such as St Paul’s Church, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. With Medieval Merchant's House about 4 miles west, the area around Bursledon has a long history. If your home is one of the older ones, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up.

DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking and it will help the survey.
How the survey works
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a written report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, it normally takes about one to two hours for a house, and more on a big or complicated roof. A visit to a smaller place like Bursledon is no different on the day: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it is safe. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
How to prepare
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
Booking a survey
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Advice
Useful tips for Bursledon property owners
Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
If anything in the report is not clear, ask us. With the Standard Survey there’s a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey comes with an in-person one.
Deal with drips, sags and loose downpipes early. They tend to get worse, and the water they spill can damage walls and timber.
