How a gutter survey works in Netley
Your gutters take the rain from the roof and lead it away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t and that usually means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. We are often asked to look into overflowing valley or parapet gutters and joints that drip after rain, across outlets and hoppers, downpipes and valley gutters.
Around Netley, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. On older homes, chimney stacks, valleys and gutters are typically where the work is, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. The fixings under an older roof often fail before good slates or tiles do.
We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible.

Gutter surveys in Netley: local notes
The coast is about 1 mile or less from Netley, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Near the sea, metal fixings wear faster and loose pieces on a roof are more likely to lift, while driving rain finds any gap. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
Take an older house close to Church of St Edward the Confessor: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. If you live near a park like Westwood Woodland Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys.

Practical tips
Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
- Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Rain should flow to the outlets and down the downpipes. If it doesn’t, tell whoever did the work.
Get the gutters cleared every year or more often near trees. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clean gutters can do their job.

Common roof problems in Netley
Hidden gutters are often lined with lead or another sheet covering. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside, because there is no outer edge for it to spill over. Lead linings can also be stolen.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Water backing up from a hidden gutter
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Netley Abbey Infant School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

- Their drone registration, if they fly one
What this survey cannot tell you
It helps to know what a survey won’t do before you book:
- Gutters out of sight from every safe viewpoint
- Confirming asbestos in older rainwater goods
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What this survey covers
- Fascias and soffits
- Outlets and hoppers
- Eaves gutters
- Downpipes
- Valley gutters
- Parapet and box gutters
How the survey works
Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Being in a smaller place like Netley does not change how the visit works: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- First, you let us know what you’ve seen, such as overflows or damp.
- We look along the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level and from windows.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
- The loft space is checked for water marks if it’s safe to get into.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Tell us about parking before the day
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Netley: your questions answered
Will you come out to Netley?
Yes, Netley is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
I let a flat near Netley station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address and what you need, and we will talk through which survey suits.
What does the report include?
It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, backed by photos. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, so you know exactly what was covered.
When is the best time for a gutter survey?
There’s no wrong time. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later, because the walls take the water.
Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?
Yes, as far as they can safely be seen. We use the ground, windows, the roof space and the roof where it’s safe, and by drone where it’s applicable.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.
What happens next?
The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Why get it checked now?
A gutter clear-out takes the leaves away but it won’t explain why water keeps spilling over. We also check the falls, joints, brackets, outlets and downpipes to show whether something else is wrong. Around Netley, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, and that is a much bigger job than the original defect.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where it applies) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
