Independent gutter surveys in Lowford

Before and after the survey

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:

  • Check for spilling water in a downpour
  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
  • Have overhanging branches cut back
  • Look for downpipes coming loose

How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. It is sent to you by email once it is done.

Hidden gutters need clearing too. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but you can’t check them from the street, so make sure they’re included in any clearing work.

Gutter survey in Lowford: what you get

Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t and that usually means the walls or the inside of the building. Our survey looks at the whole rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. Common reasons to book are leaves and moss blocking gutters and soffits marked by water, on valley gutters, eaves gutters and downpipes.

Trees around homes in smaller places like Lowford drop leaves, twigs and moss onto roofs and into gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below. It is the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from ground level.

It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend.

How it works

We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey normally takes about one to two hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. A visit to a smaller place like Lowford is no different on the day: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. It is useful to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and windows.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
  4. The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
  5. You receive a report with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

How to book

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photos included.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with the freeholder or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.

What a gutter survey looks like in Lowford

The coast is about 2 miles or less from Lowford, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. With Medieval Merchant's House about 3.7 miles west, Lowford sits in an area with a long building history. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

If you own a rental within reach of Bursledon station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. Take an older house close to St Paul’s Church: the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Lowford is about 2 miles south-west of Hedge End, in Hampshire. If you’re in Lowford, booking works exactly as it does anywhere else: a call or an email, a price, then a date. Our area takes in places right across Hampshire.

We work across the SO31 postcode area for gutter surveys. We cover properties on Hamble Lane, St George Close and Woolwich Close and the roads around them. If you are just outside Lowford, we cover Old Netley (1 mile south-west), Bursledon (1 mile south-east), Butlocks Heath (1 mile south-west), Hound (1 mile south-west) and Netley (1 mile south-west). We also work in nearby towns such as Winchester (12 miles north), Gosport (10 miles south-east), Havant (15 miles east), Eastleigh (5 miles north), Fareham (6 miles south-east) and Horndean (14 miles east).

Open spaces near Lowford include Netley Common.

When to book a survey in Lowford

Valley, parapet and box gutters are frequently lined with lead or a sheet material. Splits and blocked outlets in these gutters can send water straight into the building as there’s nowhere harmless for it to go. Lead linings can also be stolen.

We are often asked to look at:

  • Leaks at the gutter joints
  • Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
  • Sagging gutters and loose brackets
  • Blocked outlets and hoppers

Homes near green spaces like Westwood Woodland Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Their report turnaround times
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely

What to expect from a roof survey

Questions from Lowford

Is the coastal weather around Lowford hard on roofs?

Often, yes. Lowford is within about 2 miles of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.

Is my home in Lowford listed or in a conservation area?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

What’s the price of a gutter survey?

The Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard from £250 and the Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form for a price.

How much time does the visit need?

A visit usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. You will know roughly how long when we arrange the visit.

What happens next?

We email you the written report with photos and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Does someone need to be in?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when booking.

Do you work in Lowford?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes Lowford.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What to tell us when you contact us

When you call or email, these details help:

  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • The kind of building and roof involved

What we cannot see

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • The inside of buried drains
  • Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
  • Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
